Mil-Spec Circular Connectors

As with other types of circular connectors, military connectors, most often known as mil-spec circular connectors, power electrical devices and transmit data. However, these specific connectors are military grade and designed to withstand the toughest conditions in the harshest settings.

At RS, we stock almost 2,000 mil spec connectors that are ready to be shipped the same day. We offer robust products designed by leading manufacturers including Amphenol, Souriau, ITT Cannon, TE Connectivity, and our own brand RS PRO.

Read on for more information on mil grade connectors, their benefits and the applications they can be used for.

What are mil-spec circular connectors?

Mil-spec circular connectors operate in the same way as other types of cylindrical connectors. They are multi-pin electrical connectors that have circular housing. When the pins (or the plug) are joined to the housing (the receptacle), they create a secure electrical current transmission to power a device or safely send data or electrical signals.

While mil grade connectors are consistent with other types of circular connectors, they also have their own specifications that make them distinct from their counterparts. These are designed for use in military and aerospace applications. They are robust connectors that are ideal for high-impact use, thanks to the rugged materials that they are made of. They’re also resistant to extreme settings.

In addition, many mil spec connectors are airtight thanks to a strong seal around the terminal. This seal is what makes most of these components water resistant.

What are mil-spec circular connectors used for?

As their name suggests, mil grade connectors have long been used in military settings. The ones used by America’s Department of Defense were first developed in the 1930s. These connectors were used for tactical work and in aeronautical applications.

Today, they still have military applications. They are also used in other settings that require a strong connector, such as motoring and energy, including oil and gas.

What to look out for when choosing a mil spec connector

As these are military grade connectors, there are factors to be aware of when looking for the right product for the job you are working on. The AN (Army Navy) connector was the original mil grade connector. These are usually referred to as ‘military standard’ and are defined by the following codes:

  • Mil-Std
  • Mil-Spec

Both types are available here at RS.

Why choose a mil grade connector?

As with other types of circular connectors, one of the main advantages of a mil spec connector is its shape. The cylindrical design makes it a safe choice as it can easily be stored behind a panel. This makes it a good option if you need to create a circuit in an area that experiences a lot of footfall.

The main reason to choose a mil grade connector, however, is its durable materials and robust qualities. This makes it a suitable choice in situations where the transmission can continue regardless of the rough conditions it is placed in.
